This Declaration is a call to action grounded in the realities of rural practice as reflected in WONCA 2026 conference presentations. It highlights the persistent inequities faced by rural communities—especially rural Māori—and outlines practical priorities, from strengthening the rural workforce to embedding “rural proofing” in all health policy. Hauora Taiwhenua says the Declaration is intended to serve as a practical national roadmap for improving healthcare access and outcomes for rural New Zealanders.
